Programs to Empower Online Learning during and after COVID-19: LearningWorks LIVE and Outschool

COVID-19 has resulted in the hasty implementation of remote learning programs for virtually all public school and college students in the United States. In the span of three weeks, students (and teachers) who’d been attending live classrooms were suddenly learning and teaching online. Many of these programs were underwhelming, not stimulating, provided minimal interaction with teachers, and required meaningless work to be completed independently. Many students reported struggling without the structure of regular classes, homework assignments that connect to classroom instruction, and feedback around their performance. This format is particularly problematic for students with attention, learning, executive-functioning, and social-emotional struggles.

This presentation will demonstrate two online programs that address these concerns. The first, LearningWorks LIVE, is an online, small group executive-functioning training program that uses popular video games and apps as teaching tools for children ages 8 to 15. LW4K LIVE was designed to generalize game-based learning into real-world skills and targets children who struggle with remote learning due to underdeveloped organizational, time management, and focusing skills. The second program, Outschool (which hosts LW4K LIVE), is a marketplace of passionate teachers who have mastered the nuances of online instruction. These programs provide clear directions for the future of online learning.

I would like to demonstrate these programs during the session. They are innovations that will have an ongoing impact upon how remote/distance online learning is presented for elementary and secondary school kids during and after the pandemic.

Telehealth and Multicultural Behavior

Is online psychological service as effective as the same location? Understanding the answer to this question can make you an advocate of online psychological services. This lingering question also restricts many psychologists and clients from exploring the possibilities of online psychological services.

The recent events of Covid-19 and the related lockdown has skyrocketed the need for online psychological services. These unprecedented times have led to an unprecedented adaptation to the new normal way of functioning. The psychological needs have increased exponentially due to the pandemic. Usually, in my practice, I had a 50:50 ratio of online to the same location service. With the global pandemic, I am conducting 100% of my services online and the number of clients I see in a week as increased. How do we respond to this increasing need? We could continue to wait for social distancing to be lifted off or we can adopt new ways to serve our communities leveraging the available technology to connect with them during these tough times. More than ever, we are in times that demand us to move away from our current practice of same location services to online in order to serve our clients in the current situation.

Social Media and Misinformation During COVID-19

Social media has grown in importance with the increasing popularity of social networking websites in particular (e.g. Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram etc.) and social computing in general. During the COVID-19 Pandemic social media platforms experienced increased activity and usage by citizens, and also gave rise to misinformation and conspiracy theories. As people increasingly participate in online communities for social, commercial, and civic interaction, it is important to study these phenomena. This talk will provide insight into a study which examined social media data related to the COVID-19 and 5G conspiracy theory drawing upon social network analysis using NodeXL.
