The psychological impact of COVID-19 Lockdown on family relations

Abstract: This study explores the psychological effects of COVID-19 on families. It proposes to contrast selected families in Los Angeles and those in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Tanzania was selected because there is no lockdown in the East African nation, except school closures. Key to the study are the emotions and behavioral changes. The inquiry will analyze; family fears about COVID-19 and members contracting disease, anxiety, stress, and other pressures on family interactions, to consider possible closeness among family members, or whether prior tensions have been exacerbated, if so, what is being done ameliorated those circumstance. The study survey will be online, but expected findings are that the emotional and behavioral changes are predicted to be similar among families experiencing COVID- 19 lockdown or no lockdown.

The current coronavirus, COVID-19 lockdown globally is unprecedented in human history. Since, March 2020—all countries are in lockdown, some partial lockdown, but few have no lockdown. It means families have been mandated to be in the same-shared space 24-hours of each day. Some psychologists believe “this enforced togetherness could deepen” (Pandey, 2020), family relations into the future (Pandey, 2020). Erica Pandey (2020) in an article on Axios websites about the lockdown quotes Steven Singleterry, a financial professional living in Brandon, Mississippi on his family experience. Singleterry has noticed something very strange, “a sense of bonding. We spend much less time on electronics and more time together” (Pandey, 2020). When Pandey spoke to historian and author, Judith Flanders the perception was different. “In good family situations, this is fabulous. Then in bad family situations, the badness will be magnified” (Pandey, 2020). The expected findings of this research study will be a similarity in emotional and behavioral changes among families experiencing the current COVID-19 lockdown or no lockdown.
